Christmas in the Park is now entering its 29th year. The first year, 1995, featured about 30,000 lights, hand painted cut out figurines, a storage shed which served as the Santa house, a tent with hot chocolate and cookies and carriage rides. Now we feature 300,000 lights, and permanent Santa House complete with a Mrs. Clause suite for waiting to see Santa. We have remodeled the old shelter house with a built in kitchen that serves home made chicken and noodles, homemade chili, hot chocolate, coffee, and cookies. Hot dogs, sloppy joes and pop-corn help to round out the menu. The same cut-out figurines are still used. We have lights that tower to 60 feet in the two acre park in the heart of West Jefferson.
Most of the electric that is used to power the lights has been placed underground.
The best part is that there is no cost to view the lights in Christmas in the Park. From the beginning, we have attempted to provide a display that the whole family can enjoy for no cost at all. Take your own pictures with Santa with no fee. We also accept donations for the food.
In 2005, we added a lighted Christmas parade which is usually held on Saturday evening beginning at 5:30. It begins at the American Legion Post 201 of the east side of West Jefferson and travels west on Main Street to Twin Street and ends up at Garrette Park.
The official Christmas in the Park Festivities takes place the second weekend in December.
This year the dates for lights on are November 28 - January 1.
We have been featured during the past 25 years in many different newspapers, magazines, TV and Radio. The Madison Press and The Madison Messenger have been writing articles and printing pictures each and every year. We have been featured in Villages and Cities magazine, and the Columbus Dispatch. We were also mentioned in the AAA magazine.
We have been shown on TV channel 6 and channel 28 with them doing their weather broadcast from the park. WCOL has mentioned us during the past several years and we have had the morning personalities from Woody and the Wakeup call show come out to the Park to help with turning on the lights.
Each year we keep trying to add new and different ideas to the Christmas in the Park. We leave the lights on nightly until Jan. 1st when we officially turn them off for another year. Many of our guests come to West Jefferson to view the lights and have made it a yearly ritual to see our display. We have had visitors from all parts of Ohio and many have come from out of state to view our Christmas in the Park.
We hope to see you this year at Christmas in the Park!
The Christmas Parade of Lights will be held on Saturday December 14th at 5:30 pm, line-up will begin at 4:30 in the American Legion parking lot. The parade will begin at the American Legion and proceed into West Jefferson, continuing west on Main St. to S. Twin St., then left onto Fellows Ave., then right into Garrette Park. Anyone interested in having a Christmas or winter theme float in the parade should contact Carol Beachy at 614-879-8818.
What better way to spend your time putting smiles on people’s faces than being a part of a parade? It’s not only fun for you, but for those watching the entries go down Main Street in West Jefferson.
Entries don’t have to be elaborate or sensational, although some of our entries have been fantastic! All you need is some form of lighting, whether it be strings of lights, light sticks, or any other illuminating thing. If you don’t want to add lighting, just turn on the interior lights in your vehicle, roll down the windows, and wave at the people lining the streets!!!! Involve a neighbor, coworker, or anyone who wants to make a memory. It would be great to see businesses and organizations get involved, too, since they are a part of our wonderful community.
The parade line up starts at 4:30 p.m. at the American Legion (entrance is off Rte. 40) with possible other areas in which you will be directed if the need arises. The parade will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m., turning left onto Main Street (Rte. 40) and will continue West on Main until turning left onto Twin Street. The parade ends at Twin and Fellows.
The favor of a reply would be appreciated so we will know what to expect as far as entries. For any questions, or to request an entry form, you may call (614) 879-8818. Please leave a message if no answer. Entries may be mailed to TBD.
Thank you and we hope to see you on December 14th.
